First you have to fill in your current Skype version in the command below, which can be obtained with command: "skype - version". Your old Skype will then be allowed to connect again to the M$ server. The command below will output a replace command which you could copy and run in a terminal in order to change the version string in your old Skype executable. I came across and tested (on Skype 4.2 on Ubuntu LTS 12.04) the following solution that spoofs your old version of Skype to version 4.3.0.37. You can stick with your old version of skype. Why ruin something that has been working flawlessly? 4.3 has no bugfixes, it introduces more bugs instead. This may explain the non-simultaneous occurrence of the problem on different computers. Apparently, the problem is caused by a forced update of the Skypes update checker. An old version 7.36 with disabled updates continues to run fine everywhere. I want to use Skype, but stop forcing us to use 4.3, especially because it is broken. On my third computer, the same version of Skype still continues to work fine. In 4.2, there were small icons at the bottom left which was just perfect. It makes the window 10% larger, and the empty spaces are ugly. Instead many are looking for ways to keep using old Skype versions or install Skype Classic on their devices. Those giant useless buttons at the top are just irritating. Honestly, how hard could it have been to just not drop ALSA support? It's not as if I'm going to use PulseAudio anyway. It forces you to use PulseAudio, so basically sound is not working properly, microphone doesn't work and so on. Crashes with previous chat history, but if you remove it and have been talking a lot, it takes years for you to be able to actually use Skype due the fact that it downloads ALL YOUR PREVIOUS chat history.
